Ban On Importation Of Used Tyres Being Considered
The Guyana National Bureau of Standards is reporting that the agency is finding it hard to monitor used tyres which is a major concern to many consumers. Persons have been complaining about the poor quality of some used tires and have since forward their concern to the agency.
The head of standards compliance department stated that due to the lack of resources the agency has found it difficult to test adequately the number of used tyres being imported.
According to the acting Executive Director, recommendations are being considered to completely ban used tyres. She stated that GNBS is concerned over the quality and lifespan of used tires and will soon forward its recommendations to the agency’s board.
GNBS is hoping that the police force could step in and assist with monitoring vehicles with use tyres since the agency has done several training exercises with the force in this area. Currently they are some 58 tire dealers registered with the agency and 10 importers.
