The newly commissioned officers of the Guyana Defence force along with some warrant officers were today presented with their instruments of commission by President Bharrat Jagdeo after they subscribed to the oath.

Just last Thursday the officers were commissioned at their parade and commissioning ceremony. Today’s event was held at the international convention center.

The Best student for this year’s standard officers course, 2nd Lt Jamal Scott thanked the President and the army for the confidence bestowed upon the group as he promised that they will live up to expectations. And also today recently promoted Lt Col Ronald Hercules officially received his badges of rank from the President. Lt Col Hercules serves as the aide de camp to president Jagdeo.

Tonight the new officers are being hosted at a special dinner where the army will continue with an old tradition with what appears to be a form of hazing. There have been calls for the army to discontinue the practice since there have been cases of serious injuries. One senior army officer said he doesn’t see the point of the exercise and the army may need to develop some new form of initiation and not a event that could become brutal.
