Flooding Affecting Rice Sector
The Ministry of Agriculture has expressed concern over the accumulation of water in region two which now threatens the rice sector and the livelihoods of residents in that area. This concern came as a result of the extreme rainfall experienced during last week which has left many areas around the country flooded. Over the weekend the agriculture minister and a team of technical officials visited a few of the flood affected areas.
Minister Persaud noted that so far not much damage was done to the rice fields since a number of resources have since been deployed to help with the draining of farm lands and communities.
Persaud noted that efforts are being made to ensure that small farmers are also taken care of in terms of obtaining planting materials and livestock interventions since they too would have suffered.
Regional Chairman Ali Baksh stated that the region’s drainage system was under a significant amount of pressure since the system was only designed to hold two inches of water.
The Ministry has since deployed officers across the country to ensure that farmer’s livelihoods are not entirely lost as a result of floods due to the increased rainfall.
