The Professor Crowned Calypso Monarch Again
From the time he took the stage it was clear that “The Professor” from Linden had a lesson to teach the government and the rest of the competition. And taught them he did as he captured the calypso monarch crown for a 2nd time in 3 years. The singer Charles Charles who sings under the name Professor with his song titled “is dem got it so” focused on the many ills in the society and what he considered the failure of the government to address them. He even zeroed in on the PPP’s search for a Presidential Candidate.
And Guyana’s junior Calypso Monarch Diana Chapman proved that age is nothing but a number when it comes to calypso as she captured the 2nd spot in the senior competition. This was the first time that a reigning Junior monarch competed in the senior competition. Chapman’s performance showcased a different style of calypso presentation. With dancers she used every bit of the stage to bring alive her bearer anancy story.
The third spot went to Berbician The believer who is a former junior monarch and used his piece to flay the judges about how they judged him last year, he also focused on problems facing the country.
Lord Canary may have been caged and got stuck in the 4th spot with his sex demons piece.
The mighty duke had a good piece about the troubles in the Guyanese society but he failed to make it into the top 4.
Many of the other calypso pieces were disappointing as they failed to take on many current issues. A number of the calypsonians came with the same blame the judges theme which at one stage seemed overdone in the competition.
The competition was organized by the Culture Ministry and sponsored exclusively by Banks DIH.
