Former First Lady Laid To Rest
A viewing at the Funeral Home earlier in the day where President Bharat Jagdeo joined with the family, close relatives and friends of former First Lady Joyce Hoyte to paid their last respects to a most gracious, dignified and courageous first Lady.
Following the viewing the cortege made its way to St Andrew’s Kirk for the funeral service.
Tributes began just after two o’clock in the afternoon with Presidential Adviser Gail Texieira recalling the role that first ladies played in the country and specifically the significant lessons that Mrs. Hoyte demonstrated to Guyanese everywhere. Dr Faith Harding representing the PNC in her tribute to the widow of Former President Desmond Hoyte reminisced on the resilient spirit and the fortitude she displayed. Former Minister Vibert Parvattan also paid tribute.
Hoyte’s former Finance Minister Carl Greenidge delivered the eulogy and noted the life and times in which Mrs. Hoyte lived, the important contribution made to Guyana and the support she gave her husband. The funeral Service was conducted by Rev Maureen Massiah.
Joyce Hoyte nee Defrietas served as First Lady of Guyana from 1985 to 1992 and kept up to date with developments in the country when her husband became opposition leader for over a decade.
Mrs Hoyte died in Georgetown on February 14 2011 following a brief illness.
