Veteran Calypsonians Looking To Secure 2011 Calypso Competition Crown
There is a pot of social commentary brewing in the Mashramani Calypso Competition this year; even as many of the veteran calypsonians have been selected to go through to the finals. Two of the finalists in this year’s competition-Winfield James and Queen Makeba , believe that their lyrics are good enough to secure top positions in the competition.
Both Calypsonians who entered the competition last year but did not placed said that the blow of being eliminated was heavy, but vowed that their songs would be among the top three this year.
James calypso piece “Train the youths” speaks of domestic violence and fathers who are absent from the home, leaving their young children behind. He believes that his lyrics are clean and sends a strong message to the listeners
And taking a second shot at the competition this year…Queen Mackeba said there has to be something she is doing right to always be among the finals. It is on this note that she said her song this year is directed to the judges begging them to give her the crown.
Performers such as Ron canary, Young Believer, De professor and Young Bill Rogers are also among the thirteen calypsonians who have made it to the finals.
The calypso competition this year is shaping up to be good according to the organisers, citing a string of fiery songs that are likely to heat up the stage. The event is again being sponsored by Banks DIH.
