Former First Lady of Guyana Joyce Hoyte Passes Away
Tributes started to pour in just after midday today February 14, 2011 after the news that Guyana’s last surviving First Lady Widow had passed away. Mrs. Joyce Hoyte widow of former President and PNC Leader Desmond Hoyte died at the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital She had been ailing for about three weeks. Mrs. Hoyte had been hospitalized twice in those three weeks.

Joyce Hoyte served as First Lady of Guyana from 1985 to 1992 and kept up to date with developments in the country when her husband became opposition leader for over a decade.
She survived a tragic accident that resulted in the death of her two daughters Amanda and Maxine, her sister and the chauffeur in 1985. The former first Lady spent several months in rehabilitation following treatment in Cuba.
She recovered to accompany her husband to various state functions and some overseas visits including the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Vancouver.
The People’s National Congress stated that details regarding the arrangements for the funeral of Mrs. Hoyte will be made public as soon as they are available.
Mrs. Hoyte who was 77 is survived by several nieces, nephews and friends.
