Closure Of The Mandela Dumpsite Underway

Now that the new landfill site is up and running,  it is now left up to the City Council to ensure that the Mandela dumpsite is properly closed. The council is also expected to use its own resources to clean the general surroundings of the Le Repentir cemetery

But the City Council is now saying that it is still in a tight spot as it relates to funds.

Speaking today at a press conference, Director of the Council’s Solid Waste management Hubert Urling said that efforts are still being made to close off the site in an environmentally friendly way. He estimated that this will be done within another 6 months.

Urling further disclosed that the IDB in keeping with its loan agreement promised to provide the funds to close of cell three of the Mandela site-which had to be opened following the delay of the new landfill site.

The City council some time ago made a proposal to the Government that the old dumpsite be used to generate electricity. But this proposal has been dismissed by the administration since it believes that the operation will be too costly.
