Barbers And Hair Dressers Being Educated About Sexual And Reproductive Health
The Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association in collaboration with the Cosmetology association has embarked on a series of workshops geared at educating barbers and hair dressers about sexual and reproductive health.
Today a two day session concluded in Georgetown focusing on health issues such HIV/AIDS, sexual transmitted infections and other social problems.
Project Coordinator, Michael Gillis said barbers and hair dressers have been targeted since they are the ones who usually interact with persons from all walks of life on a regular basis. He also noted that the initiative will use participants as peer educators in disseminating the correct information to citizens.
Many of the participants said the workshop was useful since they are now in a better position to educate their clients about certain health issues and misconceptions about the various diseases.
A similar exercise is slated for region six as more barbers and hair dressers will be targeted in that region. To date several other workshops have been conducted in regions two, four and ten. Aside from the workshop participants will be given a community project to complete which will reflect how much information was received.
