New Dump Site Operational
Operations at the new landfill site at the back of Eccles on the East Bank of Demerara began today making way for garbage contractors and private persons to dump their garbage at the new site.
Even though the first day of operations seemed a bit slow, contractors- BK international and Puran Brothers Waste Disposal services along with other officials were on the ground ensuring that the operations were conducted smoothly.
Speaking to media operatives’ minister of Local government Kellowan Lall said that the new landfill site is expected to become fully operational in another few days.
And shedding some light on the new operations, Project manager Walter Willis said that the Haag Bosch landfill site has four cells each of which will be able to accommodate garbage for more than 10 years.
Willis also disclosed that the site will be better managed and that there will not be any health hazards or fires occurring.
And even as waste picking has become a big business the heavy presence of waste pickers will not be tolerated.
According to the authorities this operation is expected to last 10-15 years and will be able to accommodate some 6.5 hectares of garbage.
