Opposition Criticizes Health Sector
PNC/R’s shadow minister for Health George Norton today drew the government’s attention to what he says are the deficiencies in the local health sector.
Norton in his presentation in the National assembly heavily criticized the health ministry and by extension the government for the many loopholes in the sector and called for better management of the country’s medical institutions.
However while noting that there have been some improvements over the years, Norton pointed to the whole issue of maternal deaths and said that this is an issue that must not be overlooked.
And even as the government in its 2011 budget proposes to spend some $345 M on the training of health care providers, the opposition member strongly recommended that the administration follow up on its promise and consider post graduate training in the different areas of medicine. This Norton said is in dire need at the Georgetown Public Hospital especially in the area of pediatrics and obstetrics.
