When the 2011 Calypso Soca Monarch begins, there will be no Mighty Rebel. The veteran Calypsonian and reigning monarch has decided to call it quits while he’s ahead and on top. After competing for well over a decade and having 6 crowns bestowed upon him, Rebel believes its time to bid farewell to the competition but told us he will continue singing, just not competing. He explained that he’s been planning his retirement from competition for years but what made him fast tract his decision was when the state owned national communications network compiled a promotional DVD on the best of Mashramani 2010, and his winning song and performance were left off. Rebel believes its time the country grows up.

He also complained that Calypsonians still face the difficulty of having their music aired on local radio.

Rebel is known as one of the most controversial Calypsonians who has never been afraid to voice his thoughts in music about the many ills in the society. This years calypso competition kicks off early February without the monarch defending his crown.
