New Bridges Being Built To Ease Traffic Congestion
Traffic which uses Saffon Street to get onto the East Bank highway will now have to take a detour as work on the bridge at Saffon and Sussex Streets has started. The Bridge is located in the vicinity of the La Penitence Market. But to facilitate work for the new bridge Saffon Street will be closed to all vehicular traffic. However access to the La Penitence Market will be given to customers and suppliers.
Light vehicular traffic using High street and wishing to access the La Penitence Public road will have to divert from Saffon Street at Broad or Howes Street and into Ketley Street.
Work on the bridge at the La Penitence market area is expected to last for the next four months.
Construction of the bridge is being done by R. Bassoo and Sons Construction Company with supervision by the Public Works Ministry. It is hope that once the bridge and road would have been widened it will address the buildup of traffic using the east bank highway during the peak hours of the morning.
Only last year the Public Works Ministry inked a 22 million US dollar contract with the Inter-American Development Bank to extend the four lane road project from providence to Grove. The contract included the widening of sixteen bridges and culverts among other infrastructural developments.
