Guysuco Might Not Be Able To Take Advantage Of Increase In World Food Prices
As the price for sugar increases on the world market the Guyana Agricultural Workers Union hopes that GuySuCo can take advantage of such prices after this year’s first crop. World food prices rose to a record last December with sugar, grain and oilseed costing more.
GAWU”s President Komal Chand said as sugar prices increase GuySuCo may not be able to take advantage of such prices. He stated that this may be a result of the industry’s short fall in production over the last few years.
Chand pointed out that the price for sugar is not the problem but poor management of the sugar industry since the prices have been increasing. He said while some countries have stopped producing sugar Guyana should start tapping into new markets which were supplied by those countries.
The union president said GAWU supports the target set out by GuySuCo for this year and hopes it can be achieved. The union strongly believes that management should seek to offer better wages and salaries to its employees as this could improve the industry’s production.
