Ramkarran Challenges Jagdeo On Secret Ballot
Speaker of the National Assembly and PPP Executive member Ralph Ramkarran is holding on to his belief that the selection of the PPP Presidential candidate should be by secret ballot and he is now challenging President Bharrat Jagdeo over this recent statement arguing against secret ballot.
Ramkarran wants to know whether the president is implying that the 35 members of the two committees that will pick the presidential candidate are potential bribe takers. On his Facebook page, Ramkarran who has expressed an interest in being given the presidential candidate job highlighted the president’s statements and asked whether he was being accused of potential dishonesty? And whether the 35 colleagues of the CC are being accused of being potential bribe takers?
The statement by the president has apparently riled not only Ramkarran but other senior members of the party. While many party insiders believe a secret ballot is the way to go, the president who enjoys considerable support in the party appears to be going in the opposite direction and the party’s general secretary who is himself in the running has not taken a position saying the two committees that will vote should decide how the voting should be done.
Ramkarran has been pointing out that in all of the internal elections the PPP has has always used the secret balloting process. He said it embraces the same democracy that the party has been standing by for years.
Another member in the running to be the party’s presidential candidate also expressed concern recently about what he sees as the state sponsorship of one of the candidates. Referring to party general secretary Donald Ramotar who has been accompanying the president on several official overseas trips although he admitted that he was not involved directly in the meetings during the trips. He said it would be best to ask the president why he has been tagging him along.
