First CARICOM/Australia High-level Partnership Talks Started Today
Building on good partnership relations with Australia, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), has commenced talks with an Australian delegation currently in the country on development assistance partnership for the region.
The meeting which has been regarded as the first high level meeting between CARICOM and Australia will see much emphasis being placed on political and other issues of mutual concern to both parties.
The Caribbean Community and its peoples are also expected to benefit greatly from these talks since high on the agenda is practical and technical assistance for the region.
The Secretary General further pointed out that Australia has had a long lasting relationship with the community prior to these talks and is one of the countries that has been in the forefront in honoring its financial contribution to the earthquake ravaged Haiti.
Meanwhile Head of the Australian Delegation and Director General of AusAID Peter Baxter noted that the Australian Government promises to continue working with and follow the lead of CARICOM.
Also sitting in on the talks are Deputy Secretary General Lolita Applewaite and Ambassador to CARICOM Phillip Kentwell.
