East Bank Four-Lane Road To Be Extended
The growing number of vehicles using the East Bank of Demerara road has caused the Public Works Ministry to extend the existing four-lane road. On Thursday a consultation was held with key stakeholders on how to develop a road that will be able to withstand the increase number of road users. The extension of the four-lane road will start from Providence to Gove.
Only last week the Ministry inked a 22 million US dollar contract with the Inter-American Development Bank. The four lane highway contract includes the widening of sixteen bridges and culverts among other infrastructural developments.
Public Works, Transport Planning Officer, Rabindranauth Chandarpal believes the consultation will allow stakeholders to develop a better design for the 4-lane road using the current Houston to Providence model.
The Planning Officer noted that the extension of the four lane road will now include more safety features since this was an oversight during the construction of the last four-lane road.
The consultation was done in collaboration with the Inter-American Bank. Thousands of vehicles traverse the road everyday among them some large trucks.
