Region 5 To Benefit From $139M Contract
The Agriculture Ministry signed a 139 million dollar contract which could see the construction of a drainage sluice at Profit, Abary region five. Courtney Benn Construction Company was awarded the contract and is expected to have the job completed within a 12 month deadline. The project will be supervised by the ministry’s National Drainage and Irrigation Authority.
Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud declared that the sluice will provide drainage to twelve thousand acres of rice farmlands in the Abary Creek area.
Minister Persaud noted that the profit sluice will complement efforts by the ministry to improve the drainage and irrigation system especially in farming areas as two other sluices are being dug in the Mahaica, Mahaicony area.
Persaud noted that while the ministry is making efforts to improve the drainage system, citizens are being urged to desist from dumping garbage in the water ways.
