Ministry Of Human Services Increasing Their Efforts To Curb Domestic Violence
Domestic Violence over the years has taken lives and separated many families and still exists in society with the number of such cases on the increase. The Human Services and Social Security Ministry in collaboration with UNAIDS and UNICEF hosted a one day seminar under the theme “A Community Conversation on males and gender violence in Guyana”. The forum was aimed at highlighting the many issues of gender violence and how men too can play their part in bringing the number down.
There is need for men and woman organizations to work together rather than alone when it comes to addressing gender violence which was pointed out by UNAIDS, country coordinator, Ruben Del Prado.
Del Prado said on Wednesday an action plan will be presented to the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security on how all major stakeholders could work together in tackling gender violence.
The Country Coordinator believes that some men allow themselves to be disrespected based on their actions in dealing with matters and when they feel threatened resort to violence and as such the cycle of domestic violence continues. He noted that there would never be gender equality since males and females have their own unique strengths but need to understand their individual roles.
Participants of the seminar were drawn from the various faith base organization, government agencies and nongovernmental organizations. This year has seen several violent acts committed on women by their partners.
