Poor Drainage and Heavy Rainfall Could Cause Problems This Festive Season

Citizens could brace themselves for a week of rain as the La Nina season approaches. Morning showers and thunderstorms followed by rain in the afternoon are most likely to be the weather pattern for the coming days.

Agriculture Minister, Robert Persaud during a meeting over the weekend with farmers at region five has admitted that enough was not done to prepare for the rainy season. Persaud noted that more excavation work on the outfall channels will have to be done since the drainage system is designed to take only 2 inches of rain fall within a 24 hour period.

The agriculture minister noted that while work is being done to improve the drainage and irrigation system, citizens continue to use the canals and trenches to dump garbage.

The La Nina weather condition is defined as an extreme weather pattern that is above the average rainfall.
