Young People Trying To Raise Awareness On Domestic Violence
Young people are now turning their attention to Domestic Violence and how they could help raise awareness about this social ill that’s affecting mainly women. Despite the rains on Sunday afternoon students from several secondary schools and nongovernmental organizations turned out in their numbers to participate in the Rights of the child ROC-a-thon.
The awareness campaign was done through a walk which started from the Bank of Guyana and ended at the seawall band stand as the organization prepares to acknowledge International Day for the Elimination of Violence against women.
Current Miss Guyana, Tamika Henry told participants that they all have to share the blame for the many women who suffer at the hands of domestic violence since many have tolerated such behavior.
Meanwhile, the mother of Sheema Mangar, a young woman who lost her life after being robbed took part in the awareness walk as she believes her daughter’s life was taken away brutally.
Several women have lost their lives at the hands of their partners.
On November 25, Guyana will join other countries in observing International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
