West Coast Blaze Leaves 9 Homeless
On Sunday a two-storey building at De Willem West Coast Demerara was destroyed by a fire leaving nine persons homeless and an electronics store destroyed. It is reported that the blaze started around 9:30 am.
According to one of the occupants his family was not at home when the fire began since they were at the seawalls participating in a religious ceremony. The family immediately rushed home after learning of the fire but was unable to save anything.
The man said his cousin who was asleep at home when the fire broke out barely managed to escape from the building. The family estimates their losses to be in the millions since they had a well furnished home and a welding shop downstairs.
Meanwhile, SD computer and cell phone store owner Shawn Nabiyahbi says he cannot believe his labor has gone up in flames and was at home when he got a call about the store being on fire which damaged everything. The business has been in operation for the past two years.
The Guyana Fire Service was able to contain the fire and an investigation was launched.
