Investigations Launched By Maternal Mortality Committee At GPHC
As the maternal death toll rises, expectant mothers are being encouraged to join the nearest health center in their area in order to be monitored throughout their pregnancy.
The latest maternal death, carrying the death toll up to eight in three months was that of Monica Carmichael, who died one day after undergoing a C- section at the Georgetown hospital. According to the hospital, she died as a result of complications due to high blood pressure.Carmichael’s death was the second maternal death within a twenty four hour period that the Georgetown hospital is struggling to explain. Marion Bristol died on Monday after delivering a baby girl.
According to the hospital, investigations have been launched by the maternal mortality committee as well as by the Georgetown hospital into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of these women. Meanwhile, local and overseas health care providers continue to encourage expectant mothers to visit the clinics regularly.
Members of the medical profession overseas would like to encourage local health care providers to ensure that the necessary training for staff is provided, that expectant mothers are provided with procedures such as ultrasounds to ensure their baby’s safety as well as theirs and that careful monitoring is provided for the expectant mothers.
