Major Parties Still To Pick Presidential Candidates
While the PNC Presidential Candidate hopefuls have been busy with their own campaigns going out into communities and meeting with party members, the ruling PPP appears a bit quieter with its own search for its presidential candidate. The reason being because the Central Executive of the party will have the last word on who becomes that Party’s Presidential Candidate.
Though the 4 men who have indicated their willingness to serve in the position have not been campaigning, their supporters have been meeting and have been discussing the party’s campaign with whoever gets the nod.
Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee has not said much on the issue since he first announced his interest. Rohee however is the only one in the line-up who has served in a cabinet position for the past 18 years, from foreign affairs to foreign trade to home affairs. Areas where he believe could bolster his candidacy according to sources close to freedom house.
Many senior members of the party are however shying away from where their support stands, they wouldn’t even discuss it privately. It appears like a dearly guarded secret, one political watcher said.
Speaker of the House Ralph Ramkarran has been very outspoken with his plans should he be made the presidential candidate. He believes he has what it takes to lead the PPP but notes that the party could be victorious with any one of the candidates vying for the spot.
Party General Secretary Donald Ramotar who is also one in the line up has said that there is no race but rather a process. One that the party believes will work and one that will lead to victory at the next elections.
