Public Road Lapenitence Vendors To Be Removed
Concerns are growing over the removal of stalls lining the La Penitence Public Road outside the La Penitence market. The area around the La Penitence market is being seen as a major traffic blockage for persons heading to the city in the morning peak hours. However according to the deputy mayor of Georgetown, Robert Williams the vendors cannot be removed until two main considerations are met.
Recently, to ease congestion in the area, the government repaired Saffon Street which is used as a main access point to the East Bank of Demerara and signaled plans to reintroduce two-way traffic. However, this entails the removal of an estimated 50 stalls said to be sitting on a drain and lining the roadway.
Some of the stall holders have had stalls in that area for years and according to the deputy mayor, the only compensation that will be given is that a new location will be found for the vendors.
