Education Minister Displeased With Teachers Performance
The Education Minister believes teachers are depriving students of their time in the classrooms since most of them are currently attending the University of Guyana which has left students at a disadvantage.
The Guyana Teachers Union has a different view. General Secretary, Coretta McDonald said if anyone is to be blamed it should be the Education Ministry since teachers just don’t run off to attend university. The ministry would have to approve their attendance and it is the same ministry that has been encouraging teachers to upgrade their education.
But Education Minister Shaik Baksh has made it clear that if teachers are not willing to abide by the ministry’s condition of putting in extra hours after school or weekends in order to attend the University, they can simply leave the job.
The Education Minister also noted that discussions were held with the Vice Chancellor of the University of Guyana on arranging classes for Education Programmes to be facilitated after school hours which could be considered in the coming semester.
