Sugar Workers Attendance Hindering Sugar Production
The Guyana Sugar Corporation board of directors and union representatives today met at the
L.B.I Estate on the East Coast of Demerara to discuss some of the many problems affecting sugar production.
President of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) Komal Chan said the sugar company highlighted several problems with low worker turn out being one of the biggest ones.
Chan noted the corporation should reconsider a pay increase since persons are not motivated to work and the company is at a lost despite its many investments.
Meanwhile, The Guyana Sugar Corporation is urging the Unions to encourage harvesters to improve on their attendance since approximately 1.3Milllion tones of cane is left to be harvested. Government seems more concerned about the Skeldon Sugar Factory and that factory not being fully operational even with all the tests and billions spent.
