PNC Calling On Police Force To Better its Efforts In Fighting Domestic Violence

By: Shaunee Thompson

The people’s national congress reform is calling on the Guyana police force to step up its efforts to fight the increasing number of domestic violence cases in Guyana. According to the party, there have been many deaths over the years due to domestic violence, three of which happened recently and are still fresh in our minds that could have been avoided if the police had played their role.
The party said that even though there is legislation and commitment from non-governmental organizations to reduce and prevent domestic violence, it’s still continuing with full force and maybe getting even worse. The party sees a lack or purpose within the operations of the Guyana police force and it is believed that much more sensitivity training is required.
The party also believes that there should be a special unit in the Guyana police force to deal specifically with domestic violence as well as special procedures to deal with such reports, since it has become an epidemic in Guyana.

Domestic violence is one of the most pressing social issues in Guyana and has contributed significantly to the death toll over the years and is continually doing so.
