By : Yannick December
Seeking to effectively manage and utilize Guyana’s forest resources a Chainsaw Milling Project was implemented by Tropendos International through local partners, Forestry Commission along with Iwokrama International Centre for Rain Forest Conservation and Development. Speaking at a press conference, Director of Resource Management & Training, Raquel Thomas said stake holders have to influence change and improve the livelihood in forest dependent communities.
Iwokrama’s Director mentioned that the purpose of the project is to promote change in the forestry sector by providing and implementing practical solutions for reducing poverty and to provide operators with affordable technologies to produce higher value for their lumber.
Regardless of the implementation of the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) the chainsaw milling project will focus on three pilot communities, Ituni, Orealla and the Annai.
