USAID Donates $13M US to Provide Assistance in Various Sectors of Guyana

A memorandum of understanding was signed today strengthening a partnership between the Guyana Government and USAID. This latest bilateral programme will see an additional 13.1 million US dollars to provide assistance in various sectors for the fiscal year. US 2.8 million dollars will be distributed to aid Economic growth, USAID Mission Director to Guyana, Carol Horning.
Another US 2 million dollars will be allocated to strengthen democracy and governance programs, such as better protection for court documents and specialized training on new legislation for Sexual offences and domestic violence.
For the Health Sector, the rest of the money over 8 million US dollars will be allocated to address various health issues. The Mission Director mentioned that stemming from this initiative a computerized system was put in place to aid the Ministry’s Materials Management Unity.
Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh mentioned the lasting partnership between the two governments and highlighted past initiatives that strengthened economic diversification such as the Guyana Trade and Investment Support (GTIS); a project which emphasized support for private sector driven initiatives and activities such as Aqua Culture and Eco Tourism.
Ever since the GTIS project other projects have since been implemented and this latest assistance from the US AID will seek to strengthen various other development objectives in Guyana.
