The Doctor in the Tortured Teen Case is censured
Following an investigation by the medical council, Dr. Mahendra Chand, the doctor involved in the case of the tortured teen was found guilty of professional misconduct.
The council has recommended censure of Dr.Chand under the Medical Practitioners Act. The act states that the council can censure anyone found guilty of professional misconduct. While pointing out that the doctor will still be allowed to practice, Health minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, said that this is serious action taken against the medical practitioner. He further believes that the council has done a thorough investigation and has considered all aspects of the case.
The doctor in question had been seconded to the Police Force by the Georgetown Public Hospital. Dr. Chand was found guilty of carrying out a medical examination while a plastic bag had been placed over the face and head of the 14 year old boy who was allegedly tortured by police officers at the Leonora Police station. The boy’s genital area was burnt and parts of his body had marks of violence. The appearance of the photograph in the press resulted in widespread condemnation of the way the police interrogate suspects.
