Some opposition parties may not be ready for local government elections – Dr. Roger Lucheon
The tabling of the Local Authorities Elections Bill 2009 is seen as a step towards holding the local government elections this year, but the administration may now be concerned that not all of the political parties to contest the elections are ready.
Signaling this concern by the administration was Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon.
While the administration says it is mindful of all the delaying tactics which may interfere with the long overdue local government reform process, it is looking for consensus on all levels. But the main opposition party the PNC/R is expressing disappointment with the handling of the reform process and expressed a desire to have all the legislations tabled together.
The Local Authorities Bill was tabled last Thursday in Parliament and has been sent to a special select committee for review.
