GPL moves to improve power generation
The procurement of three Wartsila generation plants by the Guyana Power and Light Company is expected to boost the company’s generating capacity and reduce its dependence on diesel.
Chief Executive Officer Bharat Dindyal disclosed that in Demerara alone, 32% of the power comes from diesel and the new generation plants will result in lower operating costs for the company.
The CEO while adding that the 16 volt Wartsila plants are capable of producing over seven mega watts of electricity. The CEO pointed out that the new power plants are expected to become operational in the third quarter of 2009 and will be installed at the company’s Kingston power station.
The total cost plant of the 3 generating plants is US$30M and is financed by funds from the Petro Caribe initiative.
