PNC/R on local government elections
Even as the government tables a new piece of legislation in parliament which paves the way for the holding of the local government elections, the main opposition party the PNC/R believes that the government is trying to subvert the reform process.
At a press conference last Friday PNCR said that the unilateral termination of the work of the task force by the president without any consultation or communication is a clear indication that the PPP/C is treating the process with total disregard.
The government pushing to have the elections held later this year, but the PNCR is objecting to the current system. They believe the system is outdated.
The local authorities’ elections amendment bill 2009 was sent to a select committee for review.
