Midwives improving maternal health
In an effort to reduce cases of child mortality and improve maternal health care locally, a midwives association has been formed. This being the first of its kind has coincided with International day for midwives observed on Tuesday May 5th.
While the new association plans to confront many of the challenges of midwives in the local health sector, it is also hoping that it can raise the awareness on the importance of their work to as many people as possible.
Speaking to Capitol News, Senior Health visitor for Region four and Executive member of the Nurses’ Association Tarmattie Barker pointed out the importance of midwifery.
It is against this backdrop that Barker further disclosed some of the many challenges of a mid wife.
The theme for this year’s International day for midwives is “the world needs midwives now more than ever”.
The theme reflects the World Health Organization call for midwives and the need to accelerate progress towards the Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5 which is to improve maternal health and reduce child mortality.
