Dredging of Abary River Outfall
Farmers in the Abary river will hopefully now carry out their activities under better conditions as the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority under the Agriculture ministry move to have the outfalls of the Mahaica, Mahaicony and Abary rivers dredged.
Having a first hand look at the excavation works on Tuesday of this week, Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud said the focus initially was to dredge the outfall channels at the critical points along the East Coast, but this has been extended to the west coast to relieve the farmers there.
Meanwhile some of the farmers pointed out that the works being undertaken will certainly help them to get back on their feet and give them a better chance to earn a livelihood.
Sometime ago, the Venezuelan Government, made the promise to financially assist in the dredging of the rivers to the tune of US$5M.it is however unclear what is the status of that promised assistance.
