The General Secretary of the Guyana Labour Union, Carvil Duncan in his May Day address to the workers said time is of the essence and the Guyana Trades Union Congress need to realize that unification with the FITUG movement is the only way to move forward.
Duncan, who was speaking to workers at FITUG’s Labour Day observance at the National Park, said FITUG may not continue to wait on the TUC forever, and his union may take its own decision with regard to unity of the union movement.
The GTUC General Secretary further said while he is preparing to leave office later this year, he will leave with a sense of sadness since the disunity within the trade union movement will continue to put TUC workers at a disadvantage as compared to the FITUG ones.
The President of GAWU, Komal Chand also dealt with the disunity issue and called on the TUC workers to be a part of the FITUG Movement.
Chand’s remarks to the workers also dealt with the state of the economy, and the CLICO financial problems.
Chand said while his union agrees that the workers benefits are safe, he urged the government to carefully evaluate CLICO’s assets.
FITUG’s May Day Rally was held under the theme, “Representing Labour’s response to global challenges.”
