US warship arrives in Guyana on humanitarian mission
The American warship, the USS Kearsage sailed into Guyana on Sunday to begin a two week operation here. The operation, “Continuing Promise” and its 1500 personnel have been dispatched to sites in the north west district of Guyana and around the capital city.
Mission Commander, Captain Frank Ponds is adamant that the USS Kersarge is here on a humanitarian mission and a humanitarian mission only. Guyana is the last of six stops for the assault ship in Latin America and the Caribbean. But while the US has set up medical clinics and engineering sites, the US also sees the mission’s importance towards strengthening security and stability in the region.
