More Carifesta payments begin
The government has released 100 Million dollars for outstanding Carifesta payments and many of the remaining performers have received their cheques. The 100 million dollar release was made early Monday and payments began moments later. The administration still owes various persons and companies an additional 150 million dollars. Just last week some performers staged a picket exercise outside the culture ministry demanding their money.
It is unclear when that money will be made available but it could be sooner than later as the government moves to fast track and clear all accounts for the event. President Jagdeo at the weekend asked for patience.
Guyana hosted Carifesta 10, the regional festival of arts and culture for 10 days back in august. The government initially budgeted 500 million dollars for the staging, but that budget was soon expanded just as the event was set to start.
By the close of the event, the bill swelled to a whopping 1 billion dollars. The government is hoping for hefty returns on its 1 billion dollar investment even as the opposition party the PNC reform wants the administration to shed some light on where the money is being taken from since it was not catered for in the national budget. Reports indicate that the lotto funds are being tapped into to settle the accounts.
