Suriname/Guyana boat tragedy

                                             

Sherry Ann Haynes, who was a passenger on the vessel that was ferrying passengers from Suriname to Guyana on Friday October 24, 2008, when it sank, was found alive at a hotel at Corriverton this morning Sunday October 26. She was one of the persons fitted with a life-jacket and had swam ashore at No. 57 Village, Corentyne.

 

About 0630hrs today too, Sunday October 26, 2008, the body of Inderjeet Ramdass called ‘Roy’ of No.78 Village, Corentyne, was found along the foreshore at No.69 Village, Corentyne.

 

Ramdass was the captain of the boat that was ferrying passengers from Suriname to Guyana on Friday October 24, 2008, when it sank.

 

 

Georgetown

 

Gunfire, man detained

 

About 0030hrs today ranks of a mobile police patrol were responding to a report of the discharging of a firearm in East La Penitence, Georgetown, when they stopped and searched a man who was seen on a dam in the vicinity of the East La Penitence Primary School.

 

An unlicensed .38 revolver with two matching rounds and a spent shell was found in his possession.

 

He has been arrested and is in police custody.

 

 

East Coast Demerara (ECD)

 

Goldsmith Robbed

 

The police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred at about 0745hrs today at the Plaisance/Industry Market, ECD, where goldsmith Tularam Deodat of Ogle Front, ECD, was attacked and robbed by two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun.

 

Investigations revealed that the victim was putting out his jewellery in a glass case for sale when he was held up by the men who took away the gold and silver jewellery valued at $1.5 million and escaped on a motor cycle.

 

Deodat made an attempt to pursue the bandits but stopped after the man with the firearm discharged a round into the air.

 

 

 

Montrose Murder

 

The police are investigating the murder of itinerant vendor Harold Gobin, 54 years of Montrose, ECD, which occurred at about 0600hrs today.

 

Investigations revealed that a man who had accused Harold Gobin of stealing his cell phone went to his home this morning and wrenched open the door with a hammer. The man then dealt Gobin several blows to his head and other parts of his body with the hammer and escaped.

 

Harold Gobin was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention. The suspect is not yet arrested.

 

 

Battered body of Man found

 

The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Victor Anthony Sancho, 31 years of Annandale, ECD, whose body was found at about 0600hrs today on the railway embankment at Friendship, ECD, with bruises to his back and blood oozing from his nostrils.

 

The police are awaiting the results of the Post Mortem.

 

 

Essequibo

 

Accident victim dies

 

The police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred about 2120hrs last night Saturday October 25, 2008, on the main road at Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo, which resulted in the death of Ricky Ramnarine, 30 years of Zeelugt.

 

Investigations revealed that Ricky Ramnarine was pushing a bicycle across the road when he was struck down by a motor van. He was taken to the GPHC where he died while receiving medical attention.

 

The driver of the motor van, who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, has been arrested and is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
