Berbice residents in the dark as Power Problems hit

The Guyana Power and Light Company, GPL, is working around the clock to restore normal power supply to Berbicians, who are now experiencing just about five hours of electricity per day. GPL Chief Executive Officer Bharrat Dindyal said that Berbice requires some 14 megawatts of power, but because of faults with the generating systems at Onverwagt and Kaneville, only 5 megawatts of power is being generated.

And Dindyal, speaking at a press conference at NCN in Georgetown, said that the problem of blackouts in Demerara is as a result of demand that the company is not able to meet.

Prime Minister Samuel Hinds is calling on consumers to do their best to conserve on the use of electricity. Mr Dindial said a conservation campaign by the company met with success, with power demand dropping, but he said there is need for more funding to continue the campaign.
