US National Busted with Cocaine at Guyana Airport
A 21 year old US National was busted on Wednesday at the Cheddi Jagan Airport with just over 2 pounds of cocaine stashed in her suitcases. The woman who drug enforcement officials say arrived in Guyana one week ago, was an outgoing passenger on a Caribbean Airlines flight. She came to Guyana from New York via Barbados and was on her way back out when the illegal substance was discovered in 14 small packs in false bottoms and sides of her suitcases.
According to officials at the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit, the young lady is very coopertive and has provided the names and addresses of the persons she believes may have placed the cocaine in her suitcases.
Over the past year, there have been a number of drug busts involving foreigners who were on their first visit to Guyana. Drug dealers in the country would usually seek out young holders of US visas or US passports to get their cocaine out.
In most cases, they are either nabbed at the Cheddi Jagan airport or upon their arrival in the United States.
UPDATE: The young woman appeared in Court and was charged for possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. She pleaded not guilty and has been remanded to prison until her next court date in late July.
